Egan vows: I’ll come back even stronger

Brett Egan….itching to get back to winning ways

BRETT Egan – the tall Erdington welter with a big punch and big fanbase – next month returns to the ring after losing his “O”.

The 28-year will fight at Birmingham’s Holiday Inn on April 22. The boxer may well ease back in a four rounder made at light-middle (11st). He stresses he’ll come back stronger.

Egan – by day a civil engineer – had notched up three successive wins and looked impressive before signing up to promoter Tommy Owens’ Top Boxer tournament.

Staged on February 18 at Solihull’s Planet Ice, the exciting show saw eight welters compete in three round bouts. The last man standing earned the multi-thousand pound prize.

Brett dazzled in his first bout, widely outpointing Connor Meanwell, but was stopped in the opening session of his semi-final against Taylor Greig.

He recklessly stormed out, throwing bombs, and paid a dramatic price.

He has learned from the mistake, he vowed. He will come back stronger.

“I knew the mistakes I made straight away,” said Egan. “I knew as soon as the ref stopped it.

“I rushed in, too square on with my chin in the air. I rang Jon (Jon Pegg, manager) the next morning and said, ‘get me back in the ring as soon as you can’.

“It (the show) was a prize-fighter format and anything can happen in them.”

Defeat over the three round distance is also not a catastrophe. Eastside gym-mates Sam Eggington both lost out in such tournaments and went on to clinch major titles.

Egan itches for the chance to show what he’s really made of.

“I took a little break, went to Ireland and put a bit of weight on,” he added. “That’s why I think the next fight will be at light-middle. My future’s still at welter.”

On his facebook site, Brett states: “I know what I done wrong, but we learn from it. I will be back to winning ways very soon.

“The comeback is always stronger than the setback.”
