Denny: There will be fireworks in my fight

Press conference call for the bill-toppers on Resorts World show

FOR Tyler Denny, a career spent largely in the shadows is now being played out before the blinding light of big shows and TV cameras.

Make no mistake, the Rowley Regis southpaw has truly burst into the big time.

Tyler has gained VIP status in the fight game by outwitting, out-working and out-fighting a succession of unbeaten prospects on major shows.

He’s thwarted big time promoters’ plans for their proteges time and time again, picking up the English middleweight title along the way.

On Saturday at Birmingham’s Resorts World Arena, the 31-year-old craftsman faces another tough opponent over 10 rounds. Manchester’s Macaulay McGowan is rugged and, last year, made headlines by taking former world champ Sergio Martinez the full 10 round distance. Admittedly, the Argentinian was well into his 40s and on the comeback trail.

McGowan has regrouped with four round points victories since that loss and, in March, looked very unlucky to only draw with Farrhad Saad in Paris.

In recent fights, Denny has put young upstarts in their place. McGowan, with 22 bouts under his belt, has already been tested against real iron.

Tyler (16-2-3) has a real fight on his hands.

Tyler Denny…relaxed and smiling at Thursday’s press call

At Thursday’s press conference for Boxxer’s big Birmingham bill, McGowan said: “I’ve dwelt on the Sergio Martinez fight for a year – (it’s time to) forget that.

“Tyler Denny is a good fighter on a good run of form, I’ve nothing but respect for him. He will try to hit me more than I hit him. My game plan is to hit him more than he hits me. I’ve stayed in the gym and got little wins on little shows.”

Denny – one of the game’s true nice guys – said: “I just keep doing my thing. I’m enjoying my boxing, enjoying my life. I’m looking to put on a dominant performance.

“It’s been four years since I boxed locally, but a ring is a ring. I’m looking to come, do the business and look good doing it.

“Macaulay has been to the well, as well. It’s a good fight. He’s a game fighter, I’m a game fighter. It’s going to be fireworks.”

I believe Denny’s correct. This one could be the fight of the night.
