Delicious books his place in Euro finals
DELICIOUS Orie – the Wolverhampton super-heavy trained in Birmingham – has booked his place in Sunday’s final of the European Games.
And victory in yesterday’s semis also guaranteed the 26-year-old a place in next year’s Paris Olympics.
At Nowy Targ Arena, Poland, Orie gained unanimous victory over Bulgaria’s Yordan Hernandez Morejon.
He boxed intelligently, picking his shots, against a strong opponent.
After the victory, Orie – born in Moscow to a Nigerian father and Russian mother – said: “It’s a dream I’ve always had and now I’ve got it. Every single day I wake up I tell myself I’m going to be an Olympian and today is the day.
“It would mean everything (to win gold at European Games). Hard work pays off and throughout this tournament my opponents have put me to the test and that’s why this means so much to me because they are the very top.
“To go out there and mix it with the best and then win? I can’t put it into words.
“The Olympics is all I think of. When I’m with family, when I’m training, even if I’m doing the most mundane task, it’s always at the back of my mind that I have to qualify for the Olympics and we’re here today and we’ve done it.”
Delicious, who clinched gold in Birmingham’s Commonwealth Games, will face Mahammed Abdullayev, from Azerbaijan, in the final, staged at 2pm our time.
