Coley brothers fight on same boxing bill

Heading for the top…Lewis Coley with James Thomas at Eastside

THE rarity of two brothers fighting on the same bill takes place next month.

Lewis and Brad Coley will look to enhance their unbeaten records on Tommy Owens’ Saturday, June 10, show at Planet Ice, Solihull.

The pair – products of Birmingham’s Second City gym – are talented blood brothers.

Lewis, aged 24, chases his sixth straight win on the show. Flyweight Brad made an explosive debut in March.

Lewis – a top amateur – is looking to make a surge towards titles after a stop-start beginning to his career. During inactivity, pounds were inevitably put on.

I caught up with Lewis at Sunday’s media morning at Birmingham’s Eastside gym. “I’m on top of the weight now,” he said.

“I’m looking to come in at lightweight for this one, then get down to super-feather for titles.” Lewis certainly looked razor sharp on pads held by trainer James Thomas.

He stressed there was no sibling rivalry between the fighting Coleys.

Lewis said: “We both push each other to be the best we can be, we both help each other. We’re both going to the top.”

And he warned: “We both come with bad intentions.”

Coach James Thomas was certainly singing the praises of Brad. He said: “He’s a real student of the game, he studies the old fighters.

“This week he’s been working on the Philly Shell (a defensive technique with lead hand low and chin shielded by shoulder).

“He always wants to learn and is a joy to train, he oozes class.”

Both brothers have a big following. On the same bill, supporters could well raise the roof at Planet Ice.
