Berry: GBM deal is perfect for my future

Nyall Berry…promotional deal guarantees big show appearances

THE future appears dazzling bright for Nyall Berry after the marauding super-bantam signed on the dotted line with GBM, ambitious, new promoters on the scene.

Under the two year deal, the big hitting Chelmsley Wood prospect will have four fights a year. He made his first appearance on a GBM show last month and hammered out a clear eight round decision over dangerous Mexican Hector Garcia Dolores in Coventry.

His next bout should be in the same city on June 8.

Berry, unbeaten in 10, believes he and GBM are the perfect fit: both are relative newcomers to the game, both are hungry for big things.

The dilemma, surely, for the 24-year-old and manager Jon Pegg was whether to wait for big time promoters such as Matchroom, Queensberry, Wasserman and Boxxer to come to the table with tempting offers of TV shows.

The decision, Berry stressed, was a no-brainer.

“I’m happy, GBM are doing really well,” he said. “I decided it was right for me straight away. They started two years ago and look at them now, they have Talksport on board already.

“If they carry on like that I can’t see them not getting on TV. They’re really going to push me and I’m going to push them.”

The deal may make finding opponents for Eastside Gym’s rising star a little easier. Each demolition job has made securing significant matches more difficult.

Fellow prospects need Nyall like the plague.

He’s no longer annoyed by the snubs from fellow fighters, Berry insisted. He’s learnt to be patient.

“I’d like a title, I think I’m ready for a title,” he said. “But at the moment I’m just happy not to be on small shows and looking forward to 10 rounders.

“It is what it is. Just let me go on building my name and showing how good I am. If I keep fighting and beating whoever is put in front of me, eventually I will be (mandatory) challenger for whatever belt.”

Dolores withstood Berry’s incessant pressure and power – and always looked to come back with something. It was an ideal learning fight.

“I’ve watched it back so many times, I’ve started to pick over it,” Berry said. “But I was happy on the night, Jon (Pegg) was happy, the team were happy and GBM were happy.”

He aims to make them smile again on June 8.
