Berry dazzles in one round demolition job

Berry celebrates after another quick win

AT this level, Nyall Berry dazzles like the smile on the powerful featherweight’s boyish features.

He is mopping-up at Midlands level and a title fight must surely beckon.

At this level, the 23-year-old looks unstoppable. But other levels surely await the likeable, unassuming fighter.

Berry gave another stunning show of force at Solihull’s Planet Ice on Saturday, demolishing Sandeep Singh Bhatti in one round.

It was a thoroughly professional and slick dismantling of a seasoned (eight wins, six losses) and usually durable opponent.

Berry, from Chelmsley Wood, said afterwards: “I really need to get some rounds in. He caught me with a couple of shots and I just thought, ‘bring it on’.”

Finding opponents for the pocket rocket is, understandably, proving something of a headache for manager Jon Pegg. That was win number six for the prospect and, hopefully, fight number seven will be for the Midlands featherweight belt.

In the brief time his scheduled six rounder against Bhatti lasted, Berry (9st 7oz) showed how dangerous he is. Again, we’re talking about levels.

Nyall swept under punches and unleashed a savage drumbeat on the visitor’s ribs. One savage straight right brought a heavy stream of blood from Bhatti’s nose and the stiff shots were already marking-up his features.

Berry gets ready to strike in the opening round

Bhatti did manage to land one eye-catching right, but was taking a beating to the belly.

At the end of a torturous three minutes, Bhatti (8st 13lb 4oz) wheeled away, shaking his right hand and grimaced in a show of pain.

He was done and dusted. Officially, the result goes down as a stoppage at three minutes of the first round, but it was a retirement in all but name.

Nyall, who brings violent excitement to the ring, has a very bright future ahead.

Excuse the pun, but Berry looks the pick of the Midlands’ prospects.
