Amir aims to be first Coventry world king

Amir Abubaker…brings his brand of mayhem to the Eastside Rooms

BATTLING barber Amir Abubaker has promised fireworks when he steps into the ring at Birmingham’s Eastside Rooms on September 30 for his second pro outing.

The venue has already been the scene of one Abubaker explosion. In his June debut, the menacing light-middle destroyed Liam Griffiths with a body shot that bent the loser double.

For one punch drama, it’ll be hard to better that performance, but the 23-year-old, who runs hair salons in Coventry, is going to try.

“I feel people want to see knockouts,” said the boxer, managed by Anthony Manning. “I want to put on a good show and get the knockout.”

An opponent has yet to be named and Abubaker said three names are currently in the mix. Frankly, he isn’t fussed who it is. Amir just wants to box: he doesn’t really care who.

“That’s how it was in the amateurs,” he said. “I’d go to gyms with just a water-bottle and spar anyone.

Abubaker arrived here from war-torn Iraq as a four-year-old and says of those early years: “My family were fighters – not boxers, but freedom fighters. They’ve told me stories, but I was too young (to remember).”

A product of Coventry’s Christ The King amateur club, Amir lost a handful of 33 contests, the list including a battle with top international George Liddard.

“I’ll fight anyone, any time as long as the money’s right. I want top fights, but the money has got to be right,” he said.

Abubaker is certainly honing his skills through top sparring. “I sparred Conor Benn the other week,” he revealed. “He was a very nice guy. I showed him a little too much respect, in all honesty, but hopefully they’ll invite me back for more rounds.

“I want to keep busy – four or five fights a year – and then see where I’m at.”

Where Abubaker believes he will eventually be at is at the very top. “One hundred percent, I’m looking past British, I’m looking at world level,” he insisted.

“I want to be the first world champion from Coventry, I want to represent my city.

“When the **** hits the fan, that’s when I really fight. Some can’t, I can. I find another gear – maybe it’s because I’m from Kurdistan.”
